First aid – What to do in case of cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying can be very distressing for affected children and adolescents. The rapid spread of messages, images, or videos, as well as constant access to the internet, can exacerbate the situation. Parents then face the question of how they can help their child in such a situation.

Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying refers to aggressive behavior that originates from individuals or groups and is directed at another person with the intent to harm. This can include intentional harassment, humiliation, insults, threats, and exposure through digital media. Cyberbullying does not occur just once but is repeated over an extended period.
The most important thing is to remain calm and listen to your child. Provide your child with the assurance that they can confide in you without fear of accusations or punishment. Collect information together: What exactly happened? Where and when? Secure evidence, such as chat logs, to later trace and substantiate the incidents. It is also important to emotionally support your child and make it clear that they are not alone and that the responsibility does not lie with them.
Caution:
Do not save images or videos that depict nudity or sexual acts involving children and adolescents for evidence, as this could lead to legal consequences.
In the next step, you should take action: Block the perpetrators on the relevant messaging services and/or social media, and report problematic content on the respective platforms. If necessary, seek external help from teachers, school social workers, or counseling services. In severe cases where crimes have been committed, a report can be filed with the police. Consulting with professionals can help manage the situation and develop strategies for safe use of digital media.
Frequently asked questions:
Common signs include withdrawal, fear of using digital media, sudden mood swings, or sleep problems.
